{"id":4408,"date":"2024-03-29T09:09:56","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T09:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/locelh2.org\/?p=4408"},"modified":"2024-05-06T09:14:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-06T09:14:35","slug":"loughborough-university-success-at-leicestershire-innovation-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/locelh2.org\/fr\/loughborough-university-success-at-leicestershire-innovation-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Loughborough University success at Leicestershire Innovation Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2024\/march\/lia-2024-winners\/\">Link to the original press release<\/a><br><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container post-author-mobile\"><span class=\"author-single\">By Carl Telford<\/span><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Loughborough University\u2019s research and innovation activities enjoyed success at the Leicestershire Innovation Awards \u2013 receiving three awards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>The Awards were hosted by broadcaster and actor Martin Ballard on Wednesday 20 March at the University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lusep.co.uk\/sportpark-pavilion4\">SportPark Pavilion 4<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 one of just a handful of buildings in the UK to have attained Passivhaus Sustainability status.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>The University has been well represented in the region\u2019s flagship celebration of innovation since its launch in 2019. This year\u2019s Awards received a record number of nominations with almost 100 submitted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Two of the University\u2019s winners are Loughborough graduate start-ups&nbsp;\u2013 both launched from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lusep.co.uk\/lu-inc\">LUinc.<\/a>, the University\u2019s incubator on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lusep.co.uk\/\">LUSEP<\/a>, its Science and Enterprise Park:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><strong>Moti Me<br><\/strong>Category: Innovation in Sport, Well-being and Accessibility<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motimefamily.com\/\">Moti Me<\/a>is a physiotherapy-focused product to help children with disabilities. Since founding the company in 2021, Katie Michaels (BA Industrial Design and Technology, 2020) has been testing Moti Me prototypes with special needs schools and physiotherapy centres across the country, including Ashmount Primary School and STEPS Conductive Education Centre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><strong>The Bug Factory<br><\/strong>Category: Innovation in Food and Drink<br>Founded by Thomas Constant (Industrial Design and Technology, 2018), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bugfactory-bsf.com\/\">The Bug Factory<\/a> is revolutionising the food system through the creation of scalable, accessible and sustainable insect protein. Its innovative modular, circular-economy insect-rearing facilities empower feed enterprises to save money, reduce their environmental impact and achieve carbon-negative goals. Six months ago, Thomas relocated to Leicestershire to build a large-scale R&amp;D insect farm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>The third Award recognises the University\u2019s pioneering work in the field of green energy:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><strong>Unique lead-acid battery-electrolyser<br><\/strong>Category: Innovation in STEM Industries<br>A team lead by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/research\/experts\/dani-strickland\/\">Professor Dani Strickland<\/a> has developed the world\u2019s first lead-acid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2024\/february\/hydrogen-awards-2024\/\">battery-electrolyser<\/a> \u2013 a low-cost system, making the use of excess renewable energy to produce hydrogen gas viable. This pioneering medical technology could support the development of new therapies. These models are more ethical than the animal trials currently used and provide a method for replacing injured or diseased tissues with healthy tissue made from your own cells.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<li>A partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2023\/september\/loughborough-supports-rolls-royce-hydrogen-project\/\">Loughborough University and Rolls-Royce<\/a> with easyJet and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) which has made a significant breakthrough towards achieving net zero aviation. In September 2023, they announced a global industry first. They have developed a critical engine technology, demonstrating that hydrogen could be used as an aviation fuel \u2013 replacing fossil fuels.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/research\/aftrak\">Aftrak<\/a> \u2013 a groundbreaking initiative led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/schools\/meme\/staff\/jonathan-wilson\/\">Dr Jonathan Wilson<\/a> (Lecturer in Sustainable Energy Systems) that combines solar microgrids and tailored tractors to empower smallholder farmers across Africa. It aims to significantly increase crop yields and smallholder incomes while providing access to clean, green electricity in rural communities. The project is among the five ground-breaking global finalists for the $1 million Milken-Motsepe Prize in Green Energy.<\/li>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<li>Graduate start-up <a href=\"https:\/\/nestwork.io\/\">Nestwork<\/a> \u2013 a careers social network designed by students, for students. Created by a diverse team led by current students Flynn Duggan and Samuel Ola, and recent graduates Pobor Eruesegbefe and Som E-Agwuegbo, its innovative web platform demystifies the job discovery and acquisition process, helping students take control of their job prospects and find their first steps into their dream careers.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Professor Dan Parsons \u2013 the University\u2019s Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation \u2013 said: \u201cIt\u2019s fantastic that the University\u2019s extensive innovation and research portfolio has once again been so well recognised by the Leicestershire Innovation Awards.
