{"id":4392,"date":"2024-03-04T09:30:48","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T09:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/locelh2.org\/?p=4392"},"modified":"2024-03-04T09:31:38","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T09:31:38","slug":"hydrogen-award-battery-electrolyser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/locelh2.org\/fr\/hydrogen-award-battery-electrolyser\/","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen Award win for Loughborough&#8217;s world-first lead-acid battery-electrolyser"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2023\/december\/loughboroughhelpsprovidegreenhydrogencookingandelectricityinafrican\/\">Link to the original press release<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"container post-author-mobile\"><span class=\"author-single\">By Carl Telford<\/span><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lead acid battery electrolyser \u2013 low-cost solution for hydrogen production\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yq-aaxzrvbM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><strong>The world\u2019s first lead-acid battery-electrolyser &#8211; invented, designed and prototype manufactured in Loughborough University\u2019s Green Hydrogen Research Group \u2013 has been recognised with a prestigious award at the 2024 Hydrogen Awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Green Hydrogen Research Group members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/departments\/chemistry\/staff\/lizzie-ashton\/\">Dr Lizzie Ashton<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/schools\/meme\/staff\/john-barton\/\">Dr John Barton<\/a> were presented with the International Award for Academic Excellence and International Collaboration in Hydrogen at the 2024 Hydrogen Awards hosted by Keele University earlier this week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>It was a finalist in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/news-events\/news\/2024\/february\/hydrogen-awards-2024\/\">three categories<\/a> representing international partnerships, UK Universities, and <a href=\"https:\/\/hydex.ac.uk\/about-hydex\/hydex-partners\/\">HyDEX<\/a> Midlands-based Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) Universities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>The lead-acid battery-electrolyser is a low-cost system which makes it viable to use excess renewable energy to produce hydrogen gas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>The initial market for the lead acid battery-electrolyser is using excess solar to generate green hydrogen for cooking in developing countries.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Deploying the innovation in every microgrid in Africa would deliver the following major economic, environmental, and societal benefits:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Reduced carbon emissions and improved health especially for women by replacing charcoal cooking fuels and fumes (approximately 700,000 deaths a year are related to poor air quality).\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>By providing affordable and clean energy to rural populations through solar and battery-electrolyser technology, electric lighting extends useable working hours beyond daylight hours, enabling reading, education and supporting job creation. This also enables cold storage which ensures access to safe and effective vaccines and medicines, and safe and nutritious food.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><cite>I am delighted that our green battery-electrolyser is using excess wind to generate green hydrogen.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Deploying the innovation on every offshore wind farm would ensure that wind that could not be turned into electricity and sent to the grid could instead be made into hydrogen.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>We can\u2019t control how much the wind blows, so when renewable power sources produce more electricity than the electricity grid can cope with, the wind farm is curtailed or switched off, and that energy is lost.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"container block-default\">\n<p>Professor Dan Parsons, Loughborough University Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation said: \u201cI am
