Loughborough University wins Hydrogen Award for Outstanding International Impact
We are very happy to announce that Loughborough University has received the Hydrogen Award for Outstanding International Impact for the innovative battery-electrolyser!
The award was presented by Professor Kevin Kendall during The Hydrogen Conference at Aston University last week, where Dr Elizabeth Ashton delivered a talk titled ‘Rethinking lead-acid batteries for low-cost green hydrogen production.’

Professor Dani Strickland said: “We’re thrilled to receive this recognition from the Hydrogen Awards. Our battery-electrolyser shows how rethinking established technologies can unlock new pathways for clean energy access and hydrogen production – especially in communities that are often left behind.”
Professor Dan Parsons, Loughborough University Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, added: “This award is a testament to the world-class hydrogen research emerging from Loughborough. It reflects our commitment to growing capability in clean energy innovation and building global partnerships that deliver real impact. The battery-electrolyser exemplifies how applied research can drive both technological progress and social change.”

This low-cost battery-electrolyser produces 99% pure green hydrogen while using 99% recyclable materials, and requires no rare-earth metals.
Deployment is coming soon: the technology will be rolled out at pilot sites as part of LoCEL-H2 Project and its sister project MESCH. The device forms part of a complete system which generates renewable electricity and green hydrogen from solar power, storing energy to meet both electrical and cooking needs in remote communities.
Congratulations to all of the finalists and fellow winners!
